Student Awards and Scholarships

Every year, the School of H&K offers various awards and scholarships to reward the hard work and potential of its students.

H&K Scholarships may be applied for through the financial aid tab on MavLink. You will be asked to complete general questions that will match you with scholarships for which you are eligible. Some may require you to answer additional questions or provide additional information.


All recipients are honored at the annual H&K Awards Banquet. Scholarships are disbursed the following academic year. Please direct any questions to the H&K Academic Office at 402.554.2670.

Eligibility

Undergraduate Outstanding Service Award

This award is presented to an undergraduate student in each concentration who has demonstrated a high level of personal service.

  • -Faculty Nomination
  • -Undergraduate
  • -3.0 GPA
  • -60 hours completed at UNO Service in at least two areas: service to UNO, the School of H&K, the community, or to your profession of study.

Graduate Outstanding Service Award

This award is presented to a graduate student in each concentration who has demonstrated a high level of personal service.

  • -Faculty Nomination
  • -Graduate
  • -3.0 GPA
  • -Service in at least two areas: service to UNO, the School of H&K, the community, or to your profession of study.

Outstanding Undergraduate/Graduate Student

The School of Health and Kinesiology faculty select an undergraduate and a graduate student from each concentration area to honor, taking into consideration: academic performance, class participation and service.

Undergraduate Major Honorees - Student Honors Convocation

This award is presented to one undergraduate student in each concentration. Honorees are selected on the basis of academic achievement, as well as their contributions to the university and the community. Honorees are required to have a GPA of 3.3 or higher. The award is presented at the Student Honors Convocation and the recipient's name is included in the convocation program. The recipient competes with other College of Education, Health, and Human Sciences recipients for the Dean's Award. The Dean's award recipients from all colleges compete for the Chancellor's Outstanding Academic Achievement Award.

Eligibility

Helen B. Hewett Scholarship

This scholarship is an endowment shared by all three UN campuses in memory of Helen B. Hewett that is presented to undergraduate students in Physical Education concentrations.

  • -Undergraduate
  • -Physical Education Teacher Preparation or Kinesiology Major
  • -3.0 GPA
  • -Fulltime status (unless disbursed the semester you are graduating)

Ernie Gorr Scholarship

The Ernie Gorr Scholarship is provided to an H&K undergraduate student in memory of Ernie Gorr, a long time UNO Recreation Faculty member. Ernie Gorr was a teacher and coach at Omaha University for more than 20 years and a Midwest Region National Parks and Recreation Award winner.

  • -Physical Education Teacher Preparation, Kinesiology, or Public Health Major
  • -3.0 GPA

Moe and Irene Mellion Endowed Athletic Training Scholarship

The Athletic Training faculty selects one or two AT students to receive a scholarship in memory of Moe Mellion, a Team Physician at UNO for nearly 19 years. Selections are based on a student's service to the Athletic Training Program in both the academic and clinical setting.

  • -Athletic Training Major
  • -3.0 GPA
  • -Two Letters of Recommendation

Wayne and Mary Claire Wagner and Family Endowed Athletic Training Scholarship

The Athletic Training faculty selects one AT student to receive a scholarship in memory of Wayne Wagner, a longtime athletic trainer and assistant professor at the UNO. Selections are based on a student's service to the Athletic Training Program in both the academic and clinical setting.
