  5. Director's Welcome

If you are reading this, then you are curious about the School. The College of IS&T formed the School of Interdisciplinary Informatics, or Si2 (prounounced affectionately as S-I-two), with a strong belief that interdisciplinary education and research are necessary for preparing the next generation of tech professionals and for stimulating innovation in our local, regional, and global economy.

As an academic unit, Si2 is home to three undergraduate programs in Applied Computing and Informatics, Cybersecurity, Bioinformatics; and four graduate programs in Biomedical Informatics (MS and PhD), Cybersecurity (MS), and IT Innovation (MS). Of all the programs, our Cybersecurity programs make up about 2/3rds of our student headcounts and courses. Our Cybersecurity programs maintain a designation as a prestigious Center for Academic Excellence in Cyber Operations (CAE-CO) and it is also accredited as a CAE in Cyber defense (CAE-CD). It grew 298% in 10 years (2013-2023) and continues to grow at an incredible rate. In 2024, Si2 launched an all-new revamped Applied Computing and Informatics program that we expect to grow to accommodate the burgeoning need for human-centered computing specialists in biomedince and design and innovation. Finally, we also launched a new effort to have our Biomedical informatics program become CAHIIM certified in health informatics.

Si2 is a unique place where faculty are collaborative and dedicated to making a difference in the lives of our students, our Omaha community, and in the many diverse fields of research that we work in. If you are a prospective student - consider the transformative career opportunities afforded to you by our degrees. If you are considering an opportunity with Si2, we are happy to collaborate! Reach out and say 'hi'.
